Southern Eye Associates has recently purchased a
new state-of-the-art Optical Coherence Tomographer,
a new type of medical diagnostic imaging modality
from Carl Zeiss Meditec.
The OCT provides direct cross-sectional images of
the retina for objective measurement and subjective
clinical evaluation in the detection of glaucoma and
retinal diseases. This new device images and analyzes
macular thickness, the retinal nerve fiber layer,
and the optic disc using the latest technology for
high resolution scans. The principle is much like
that of ultrasound except that light is used instead
of sound.
Clinically the most versatile and valuable technology
available, the StratusOCT allows us to easily detect
and analyze finding such as cystoid macular edema,
macular holes, central serous retinopathy, retinal
detachments, retinal dystrophies, and various other
diseases without contacting the eye.
