Understanding
a Choroidal Nevus |
|
A
choroidal nevus (kuh-roid-ul knee-vuss) is a benign
pigmented spot like a freckle or mole located
on the layer under the retina known as the choroid.
Nevi are common in people with light colored skin
and eyes and who are often exposed to sunlight.
They are also more common in people between the
ages of 50 and 70.
Nevi do not have any symptoms and usually have
no effect on vision. However, a very small fraction
of nevi can sometimes develop into a choroidal
melanoma, or a tumor, which may require laser
treatment or radiation therapy.
It is very important to have your eyes dilated
at least once every year to monitor the stability
of a nevus and note any changes in its size or
shape. Be sure to wear UV-protecting sunglasses
when outdoors, even at an early age.
